Small Town American 4th!

We started our 4th of July in small town America with reserved hopes for the celebration. With the rodeo not until Friday and fireworks cancelled we were beginning to feel that our 4th would be a bit lacking but Dubois, WY came through in the end. Our day started with a simple and cheap continental breakfast. This of course was an all you can eat affair and we took to the challenge with multiple bowls of cereal, yogurts, bagels, and eggs per person. While attempting to eat the ranch out of business we met Isaiah, the ranch's fly fisherman guide. We chatted with him for a while and were invited to hang out at his campfire after he got back from his afternoon fishing trip. While lollygagging around camp one of the folks in an RV next to our campsite offered us eggs, bacon, and hash browns. Not being able to pass up a free meal we accepted and devoured. We rolled into town just in time to pick up a tasty 6 pack of Grasshopper APA from Teton Brewing Company. After rising for the national anthem we sat on the side of the road and watched the menagerie of entries go by ranging from the senior center float to the hotrod doing donuts. 4th of July must be better than Halloween here as every car and float was throwing candy out and children littered the street grabbing what the could while narrowly avoiding being run over. Despite our old age we still managed to sneak a few handfuls. The last entry was the fire department who drove down the street with their hoses pointed up causing everyone to end up soaked, a nice treat to cool off in the heat of the afternoon. After the parade finished the town went over to the brand new volunteer fire house for some free burgers and brats. Over the next few hours in between chatting with locals we managed to stuff ourselves to the brim once more. One guy's parting words to us were "Vote for the RIGHT candidate, not the wrong one" Exceedingly content, we decided it was past nap time and hopped on our bikes to lazily roll back to the campground. We took every precaution to make sure as little effort was expended as possible. After naptime we got up and took a walk around camp finding two fellow cyclists, one riding around the country for a year and another riding East to West on the Transcontinental Route. After a gorgeous sunset we went over and hung out with Isaiah, Lonnie, and a few other ranch employees around the campfire. We were invited to hang out for another night for the big party they were having Thursday night. The trail calls, but it was an awesome end to an awesome day.

  1. Sounds like you are making good progress! A couple thoughts--

I think it'll be just ahead of you guys, but I'm doing an endurance ride on CDT just above Chama, NM near the Colorado/New Mexico border on Sat 7/14. Do you want me to drop a cache there for you?

Also, let me know when you get to Cuba, NM. There's a good New Mexican restaurant I can meet you at there.

Finally, I saw you put 7/27 for Grants mailstop. If that schedule works, I might be able to join you for a segment near Mt. Taylor or Pie Town.

    Let me know.
